NSU Alumnus takes on the Renaissance

Amidst the electrifying atmosphere of Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, one man stood out in the star-studded crowd, rubbing shoulders with music greats like Tamar Braxton, Kelly Rowland, and LeToya Luckett. 

Phil Thornton, a music executive extraordinaire and a proud alumnus of Norfolk State University. His presence at this homecoming concert was not merely a testament to his connections; it was a celebration of his journey from the halls of Norfolk State to being a mogul of the entertainment industry. 

Hailing from Norfolk, Virginia, Phil Thornton’s passion for the entertainment world ignited at a young age, particularly within the realm of radio. An internship opportunity at the local station WOWI-FM kick-started his career. This path eventually led him to Arista Records, where he had the privilege of working alongside iconic figures like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, solidifying his place in the industry. 

As he continued to evolve professionally, Phil Thornton relocated to Los Angeles and created an entertainment powerhouse. This multimedia, television production, and artist management company became the driving force behind the careers of talents such as Faith Evans, Michelle Williams, Kenny Lattimore, and Mack Wilds. Thornton also played a pivotal role in producing hit TV One shows like “LisaRaye: The Real McCoy” and serving as an executive producer for TV One’s “R&B Divas Atlanta” and its popular spin-off, “R&B Divas L.A.” 

 
Recently, Phil Thornton has been making waves in the industry, with his popular podcast titled “We Sound Crazy.” This show has played host to legendary figures like Missy Elliott and Lil Wayne, engaging in conversations that have captivated audiences worldwide. His podcast success, combined with his numerous accomplishments, led to his recognition as a member of Billboard’s prestigious “40 Under 40.”Appointed as the Senior Vice President of the Capital Christian Music Group, further solidifying his position as a key player in the music industry. 

Yet, with all these achievements, Phil Thornton remains deeply rooted in his beginnings, never forgetting the 757 area. He continually returns to his alma mater, Norfolk State University, where he generously shares his career insights and gives back to the Norfolk State community. His dedication has played a pivotal role in putting this region on the map. 

Phil’s remarkable journey comes full circle when he attends events like the “Renaissance Tour.” It is a confirmation of the dream he had of becoming a household name, a dream he has turned into reality through hard work, perseverance, and a deep connection to his home.
