This was just the game the ladies needed to get in the winning column. They faced the Morgan State University Bears and won in 3 sets, with their scores being 25-15, 25-23, and 25-16. The Spartans were fierce the whole match and kept the Bears on their toes the whole time.
Many players for the Spartans played really well that night in their sweep win over the Bears. Anna Rupertova had 9 kills and 2 blocks and Jannel Ezeagwu had 9 kills as well. Julisa Carrizosa had 8 kills, 2 aces, and 19 digs.
Quiana Griffin and Halley Mcknight played great as well. Griffin had 6 kills and McKnight had 5 kills. The Spartans had a total of 39 kills which allowed for them to get out on long runs and extend their lead.
The Spartans got off to a great start in the first set by going on a 7-0 run that would eventually become a 13-5 run to put them up by ten in the set. With some kills by Jannel Ezeagwu they were able to easily take the first set.
The second set wasn’t as easy as the first set had been but by going on a 7-0 they were able to gain the lead. Morgan State didn’t give up though. They went on their own 11-4 run to bring the score even by a couple of kills by Tylar Roberson and Zoe McBride. The score was going back and forth between the Bears and the Spartans but with a couple of last minute kills by Anna Rupertova they were able to take the 2nd set with a score of 25-23.
The Spartans started the 3rd set with a 11-3 run. The Bears couldn’t hold the Spartans so they kept up their intensity. Halley McKnight and Quiana Griffin both had 3 kills in the 3rd set which allowed the Spartans to run away with last set, 25-16.
Zoe McBride for Morgan State had 11 kills and 9 digs in the losing effort.
The Spartans have an overall record of 1-14, 1-5 MEAC. Morgan State fell to 8-11, 2-4 in the league. The next home match is against George Washington on Monday, Oct. 21.
