Norfolk encourages residents to be mentally healthy during National Depression Awareness Month

Free suicide prevention workshops, depression screenings, Out of Darkness Walk & GAP enrollment registration during month of October

One day, five locations and one hour where you can learn how to safely reach out to someone who may be thinking about suicide and connect them to appropriate help.
October is National Depression Awareness Month.

The City of Norfolk is partnering with The Sarah Michelle Peterson Foundation for Talk Saves Lives and Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention.
The Talk Saves Lives workshops will take place on Monday, Oct. 2, from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the following five Norfolk locations.

  • Slover Library – 235 E. Plume St
  • Southside Aquatics Center – 1750 Campostella Road
  • Pretlow Anchor Branch Library – 111 W. Ocean View Ave
  • Lamberts Point Community Center – 1251 W. 42nd Street
  • O’Connor Brewing Company – 211 W. 24th Street

On Saturday, October 14, the Out of the Darkness Walk will take place at the MacArthur Center green from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  This is the 13th year for the Out of the Darkness Walk and first year the Walk is in Norfolk.

Depression is a treatable illness.  The Norfolk Community Services Board encourages residents to take a free online mental health screening.  http://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/hyho

Virginia GAP is expanding eligibility to adults with serious mental illness who are within 100% of the federal poverty level, up from 80%.  The Norfolk Community Services Board is providing free GAP application clinics every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at 3755 E. Virginia Beach Blvd.  The first clinic is October 4.

Applicants should bring :

  • A valid Virginia ID from any public or state agency
  • Proof of Virginia residency
  • Documentation from inpatient or outpatient provider showing mental illness diagnosis
  • Documentation of recent income

Applicants do not have to receive services from Norfolk Community Services Board to apply.
