NORFOLK, Va. – For the second week in a row and the fourth time this season, Norfolk State’s Devin Hemmerich has been selected as the MEAC’s Pitcher of the Week.
Hemmerich’s latest honor comes after he broke a school strikeout record for the second consecutive week. On Friday, Hemmerich struck out 13 Coppin State batters in a 4-2 NSU win, giving him 95 strikeouts on the season to break the previous NSU season mark of 92 set by coach Claudell Clark in 2000. A week prior, Hemmerich broke the school’s career strikeout record in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
Hemmerich allowed just four hits and two runs with two walks in pitching all nine innings against CSU, his fifth complete game of the season. The win was the seventh in a row for Hemmerich (8-2) and marked the fifth time in his last six appearances and sixth time this year that the senior left hander has struck out at least 10 hitters in a game.
Hemmerich now ranks tied for first nationally in wins, tied for second in complete games and third in strikeouts. Hemmerich also leads the MEAC in ERA (2.07), wins, innings pitched (78.1), strikeouts and complete games. He is the NCAA’s active Division I career leader in complete games, ranks fourth in strikeouts, ninth in innings pitched and 12th in wins with 22 – one away from tying NSU’s career record.
The Spartans (21-14, 14-3 MEAC North), winners of nine straight games, play a road game at North Carolina Central on Wednesday in Durham, N.C.
