NORFOLK, Va. – Longwood spoiled the Norfolk State men’s tennis home finale with a 6-1 victory over the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at the Norfolk State Tennis Complex.
Agustin Carrizo earned the only point for the Spartans, defeating Jorge Gomis 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position. The victory was the first of Carrizo’s collegiate career.
Longwood opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests, grabbing a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
The Lancers’ top duo of Amadeo Blasco and Florian Uffer cruised to a 6-2 victory over Norfolk State’s Andres Alcaraz and Dan Dumitrascu. Gomis and Noah Petralia clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over the Spartans’ No. 3 pair of Vini Da Silva and Ignacio Guevel. Julian Farthing and Arthur Bardellotto completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory over Flavian Fernandez and Agustin at the No. 2 position.
Longwood fed off the momentum, winning five of six singles matches, including the first three to secure the team victory.
In the top singles’ contest, Blasco defeated Alcaraz in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Farthing registered a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Fernandez at the No. 4 position to give Longwood a 3-0 lead. Uffer clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Da Silva at the No. 2 spot.
After Carrizo secured his win, the Lancers closed out the Nos. 6 and 3 singles positions in short order.
Guevel fell to Petralia 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 position before Bardellotto claimed a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Dumitrascu at the No. 3 spot.
Norfolk State will have a quick turnaround as the Spartans will travel across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel tomorrow to take on rival Hampton at 1 p.m.
