Korir sets new 10K school record at Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Ronald Korir set a new school record in the 10,000 meters to lead the way for the Spartan men’s track and field team at the Colonial Relays this weekend on the campus of The College of William & Mary.

Korir took fourth in a stacked field in Thursday’s 10K final, posting a time of 30 minutes, 38.46 seconds. He bettered teammate Haileyesus Demsie‘s previous school record (32:28.05) by almost two minutes. Freshman Felix Kiprotich also ran well in the event, placing 20th in 31:30.25. Those two times are the best in the conference so far this outdoor season

Kiprotich and fellow freshman Jaylen Banks were two of the busier Spartans on the track over the weekend. Those two, along with Allan Frye and Rashad Ramsey, won the sprint medley relay in 3:25.63 and placed seventh in the 4×400 meter relay in a time of 3:17.00.

Banks posted two top-10 finishes in individual events, taking seventh in the 200 meters (22.21) and 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (54.93). Ramsey also ran both events, placing third in the 200 (21.94) and 17th in the 400 hurdles (56.21).

In the field events, Jacob Milton took home first place in the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 10.25 inches, a season-best effort and the top mark in the MEAC this outdoor season. Teammate Garth Warner was eighth in the same championship section of the high jump (6-6.25), while senior Joseph Boyd was fourth in the university section of the high jump (6-2.25).

Other top finishes in the field events included Da’Trail Hockaday taking sixth place in the hammer throw (141-2) and Shaw Barfield matching his season-best clearance in the pole vault (12-5.5).

The Spartans are off next weekend before returning to action at the Charlotte 49er Invitational in two weeks.
