NORFOLK, Va. – Dajana Cvjetkovic and Paula Fortuno registered three wins each over the course of Saturday’s two-match sweep as the Spartans notched wins of 6-0 and 4-0 over Maryland Eastern Shore at the Norfolk State Tennis Complex.
Cvjetkovic and Fortuno allowed their opponents to win a total of one game in the six matches.
In the first match of the day, Norfolk State (3-6, 1-1) opened its home schedule by taking all six singles matches in a match which did not count toward the MEAC Northern Division standings. The Spartans earned the first point of the day with a default win by Aranza Mellet when the Hawks were short a sixth player. The five matches that were contested went in favor of the Spartans in straight-set victories, with Maryland Eastern Shore (0-10, 0-4) able to win just two of the 62 games.
Ana Popovic, Fortuno and Bruna Goncalves registered straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victories at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Fortuno knocked off Tearrnaey Peak first, while Popovic finished her match with Michal Kittrell shortly afterwards.
Liza Gordeeva clinched the victory for the Spartans with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Hawks’ Alese Brown at the No. 2 singles position. The final two matches were allowed to play to completion, which saw Goncalves closing out her match over Jayla Gilliam moments before Cvjetkovic claimed her first point of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Melequa King.
In the second match of the day, Norfolk State evened its conference record at 1-1 by sweeping every match that was played to completion.
The Spartans grabbed the early lead by claiming matching 6-0 victories at the top two doubles positions. Norfolk State’s No. 1 duo of Cvjetkovic and Gordeeva claimed a 6-0 victory over the Hawks’ pair of Brown and Kittrell, while Fortuno and Mellet registered a 6-0 victory of their own against Peak and Gilliam.
Once again the Spartans earned a default victory at the No. 6 singles position, with Goncalves taking the win this time.
Leading 2-0, Norfolk State wasted little time claiming its second victory of the day, as Fortuno and Cvjetkovic claimed straight-set victories. Fortuno defeated Brown 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position, while Cvjetkovic matched her teammate with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kittrell at the top position.
Gordeeva, Popovic and Mellet were up in their matches at the Nos. 2, 4 and 5 positions when Cvjetkovic clinched her match and the victory for the Spartans.
Gordeeva led 6-1, 1-0 over King, while Popovic was ahead of Gilliam 6-0, 4-0. Mellet was ahead 6-0, 3-0 against Peak at the time of completion.
