Spartans drop fifth straight match after a 7-0 loss at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swept all eight matches without losing a set en route to a 7-0 victory over the Norfolk State men’s tennis team on Sunday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.

The Spiders (16-2) secured the doubles point with victories at the top two pairs, while taking all six singles points with straight set victories.

Richmond’s top duo of Jonathan Quenard and Caleb Troy claimed a 6-4 victory over Norfolk State’s Andres Alcaraz and Vini Da Silva, while the tandem of James Aronson and John Karlawish claimed a 6-2 decision over the Spartans’ Dan Dumitrascu and Flavian Fernandez at No. 2.

In singles action, Da Silva and Agustin Carrizo provided the stiffest challenge for Norfolk State at the Nos. 3 and 5 positions, respectively. Da Silva dropped the first set to Karlawish 6-3, before forcing the second-set to a tie-breaker. However, he dropped the set 7-6, after losing the tie breaker 7-3. Carrizo nearly forced a third-set tie-breaker before falling to Brice Polender 6-3, 7-5.

At the No. 4 position, Fernandez was also competitive, but dropped his match in straight sets to Matt Fernandez, 6-3, 6-4.

Richmond’s top singles player, Jacob Dunbar, defeated Alcaraz 6-2, 6-2, while Troy defeated Dumitrascu 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Klein Evans of Richmond defeated Ignacio Guevel 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.

The Norfolk State men will open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host UC Riverside at the Norfolk State Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
