Hemmerich, Baughan claim weekly MEAC accolades

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State pitcher Devin Hemmerich was selected as the MEAC Pitcher of the Week and designated hitter Stephen Baughan was named Co-Rookie of the Week as the conference released its weekly baseball honors on Monday.

Hemmerich earned two complete-game victories last week, allowing a total of one earned run for a 0.50 ERA and striking out 20 in his two appearances. Last Monday, Hemmerich allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out 10 against Delaware State in a game that was pushed back a day due to rain.

On Sunday, Hemmerich pitched another complete game, his third in a row, and allowed just six hits and one unearned run in a 7-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Hemmerich again matched his career with 10 strikeouts, his third game with at least that many this season. He walked just one batter in his two starts during the week.

In his last three starts, Hemmerich is 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA, including 27 strikeouts, 11 hits and one earned run allowed in 27 innings. For the season, he is 4-2 with a 2.11 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 47 innings worked. Hemmerich leads the MEAC in complete games (four), strikeouts and innings pitched and is tied for first in wins. Nationally, Hemmerich leads Division I in complete games, is tied for 24th in wins and 31st in strikeouts.

Baughan played in five of the Spartans’ six games last week at the DH spot. He batted .615 (8-for-13) with five RBI and four runs scored for the week. In the three-game sweep of MDES, Baughan went 7-for-9 with five RBI and three doubles. He had two two-hit games against the Hawks and was a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles in the middle game of the series.

This is Hemmerich’s second time winning the MEAC’s Pitcher of the Week award this year and the fifth time in his career. Baughan earned his first career conference recognition.

The Spartans (9-12), winners of four straight, play a 6 p.m. game at William & Mary on Tuesday.
