ORLANDO, Fla. – Evansville won all nine matches to post a 7-0 victory over the Norfolk State women’s tennis team on Tuesday night at the USTA National Campus.
The Purple Aces (7-7) took three of the six singles matches in straight sets and also won two of the three doubles matches by a comfortable margin. The Spartans dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
Norfolk State won just one set in the other two matches. Evansville’s Daria Pentsova and Andjela Brguljan won at the No. 2 spot over Ana Popovic and Bruna Goncalves by the score of 6-1, while the Purple Aces duo of Diana Tkachenko and Andrea Pascual-Larri downed Paula Fortuno and Aranza Mellet at the third slot, 6-0.
Norfolk State forced two singles matches to tie-breakers before eventually falling. Cvjetkovic and Yamada traded 6-1 victories in the first two sets, but Yamada took the tie-breaker, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 1 position. Pentsova was forced to a tie-breaker by Fortuno, before claiming a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory at the fourth spot.
At the second spot, Tkachenko was ahead 3-0 in the first set when Gordeeva was forced to retire from the match with an injury. Nicoli Pereeira defeated Popovic at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-1. In the last two matches, Evansville won by a 6-2, 6-1 margin at the fifth position where Soldatu topped Goncalves, while Pascual-Larri earned a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Mellet at the last spot in the lineup.
The women are scheduled to play Hampton and Duquesne on Wednesday.
