NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore pitcher Hunter Halford and freshman third baseman Meaghan Barfield were honored by the MEAC office on Monday afternoon when the weekly softball awards were announced. Halford earned the league’s Pitcher of the Week award, and Barfield was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
Halford threw 18.1 innings over the weekend in four games as part of the Spartan Classic, allowing just one earned run during that time. Barfield hit .364 as NSU went 2-2 on its home field.
A native of Jacksonville, N.C., Halford earned both of NSU’s wins against Buffalo this weekend. She threw a shutout on Saturday, giving up five hits in all seven innings of the team’s 4-0 win. Then on Sunday, Halford was able to work out of several jams in the team’s 4-2 win over the Bulls. She threw all seven innings and allowed 12 hits but just two runs, one earned.
In addition, Halford also pitched in relief on both days in NSU’s two losses to Hartford. She allowed just one hit and one unearned run in 3.2 innings on Saturday, and Halford got the final two outs in the seventh inning on Sunday. Altogether, she totaled eight strikeouts over the weekend.
Barfield, a native of Virginia Beach, batted 4-for-11 in the four games with three RBI. She knocked in a pair on Saturday in the win over Buffalo, hitting a sacrifice fly in the first and adding another RBI in the third on an error. She also went 2-for-4 on Sunday in the loss to Hartford, singling home a run in the bottom of the seventh as NSU’s rally fell just short in a 6-5 loss.
Halford owns a 3-0 record this season with a 1.02 ERA in 27.1 innings of work. Barfield is hitting .375 (6-for-16), second on the team. She has totaled three runs, one double and three RBI.
It marked the first honors won this year by a Spartan player.
NSU will return to the field on Friday for the start of the Camel Stampede Invitational hosted by Campbell.
