NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team will play its second straight weekend at home when the Spartans host Hartford and Buffalo for the two-day Spartan Classic. Each team will play the other two twice, once on Saturday and once on Sunday at the NSU Softball Field.
Action gets underway on Saturday when Buffalo and Hartford compete at 10 a.m. NSU will take on Hartford at 12:30 p.m., followed by its game against Buffalo at 3 p.m. Then on Sunday, Hartford and Buffalo play again at 9:30 a.m., and NSU takes on Buffalo (noon) and Hartford (2:30 p.m.) after that. Start times for the second and third games each day are tentative based on the length of the games beforehand.
Norfolk State will have live video for Sunday’s games but will only have video for the Buffalo-Hartford game on Saturday due to having softball, baseball and basketball all at home that day. Live stats will be available for all six games at the tournament through the NSU athletics website.
The Spartans began their season last weekend by splitting a doubleheader at home against Marist. NSU won the first contest 4-3 before Marist came back to win the second game, 6-2. It marked the first time in four years the Spartans were victorious on opening day.
Hartford has not played a game yet this season. Buffalo owns a 0-5 record after its first week of action in Louisiana. The Bulls will play at George Mason on Friday before heading down to Norfolk.
NSU has never played Buffalo and is 2-4 all-time against Hartford, having last played the Hawks in 2013 at a tournament at Delaware. The teams split their two meetings there, with Hartford winning 3-2 and NSU returning the favor the next day in a 5-3 victory. The Spartans also hosted Hartford in tournaments in 2004 and ’08.
Norfolk State Update

Lopez and freshman Meaghan Barfield each had two hits in game 2. Lopez finished the series 4-for-5 with three RBI, and Barfield scored a pair of runs while hitting one of the team’s two doubles on the weekend. Senior Devon Bitler batted 3-for-6 as well. More encouraging for the Spartans, they committed just one error in the field on 57 total chances.
