Rodriguez named to All-MEAC preseason team

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore bowler Alexa Rodriguez was named to the preseason All-MEAC Team on Wednesday morning when the conference office announced its preseason honors for bowling for the 2016-17 season.

In addition, NSU was picked to finish second in the MEAC Southern Division in voting done by head coaches and sports information directors.

Last year’s MEAC Rookie of the Year, Rodriguez was one of six players in the league voted to preseason all-conference team for this upcoming season. She earned second-team All-MEAC honors in her freshman season in 2015-16 after averaging 194.6 per game. She earned a spot on the MEAC All-Tournament Team after leading the Spartans to the championship match.

The Spartans received one first-place vote and garnered 44 points to finish second behind North Carolina A&T. The Aggies had 11 of the 15 first-place votes with 54 points. Bethune-Cookman (29 points, two first-place votes) and Florida A&M (23 points, one first-place vote) rounded out the standings.

MacKenzie Robinson of North Carolina A&T was voted the preseason MEAC Bowler of the Year. She and Rodriguez were joined on the preseason team by Delaware State’s Elizabeth Burkholder and Chelsey Merkinger, Thashaina Seraus of Maryland Eastern Shore and Ivory Miles of Bethune-Cookman.

MDES just edged out Delaware State for the top spot in the Northern Division. The Hawks received 80 points and nine first-place votes, while Delaware State had 78 points and eight first-place votes.

The Spartans open their season on Oct. 22 when they host the two-day Hampton Roads Invitational at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake. NSU finished 16-8 and in second place in the Southern Division last year.
