Goodyear plant faces penalties related to workers’ deaths

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — State safety officials say Goodyear’s plant in Danville faces additional penalties following recent deaths there.

Local news organizations report that the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Thursday that it had filed a citation last week related to one of the deaths and will issue another one Friday.

Jennifer Rose, VOSH safety director, says the exact amount of the penalties will be released next week.

William “Billy” Scheier died at the plant in August. His death was the fourth worker fatality in a year.

Fifty-two-year-old Greg Cooper died in April 12, 54-year-old Kevin Edmonds died in March 31 and 56-year-old Jeanie Lynne Strader died in August 2015.

The plant has already been fined in relation to the deaths of Strader and Edmonds and is contesting those penalties.
