Taylor to compete in Iraq this season

Former Norfolk State guard D’Shon Taylor of the Norfolk State men’s basketball team will continue his career this upcoming season in Iraq.

NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State guard D’Shon Taylor of the Norfolk State men’s basketball team will continue his career this upcoming season in Iraq. Taylor has signed to compete with Al Mina of the Iraq Superleague.

He recently wrapped up his two-year career with NSU, averaging 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 2015-16. He finished in the top 15 in the MEAC in steals, 3-point field goal percentage (35.5), free throw percentage (76.9), field goal percentage (45.0) and scoring as well as 20th overall in rebounding.

He was named to the preseason All-MEAC second team before his senior year and earned spots on the AD’s Honor Roll and the MEAC All-Academic Team.

Taylor also competed with the Bahamas National Team this summer at the 2016 Central American and Caribbean Basketball Championship, or Centrobasket.

Al Mina is one of nine teams in the Iraq Superleague. The team finished as the regular season champion in the league at 11-1 last year. Al Mina fell in the best-of-three finals to second-place Al Karkh. Taylor will be one of seven players on the squad this year.

He becomes the third former Spartan so far to sign with a professional team for this upcoming season. Former NSU guards Jeff Short(Spain) and Michael Deloach (Italy) will also compete this year across the pond.
