NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State junior libero Melvina Brown and freshman setter Jill Aquino were honored by the MEAC on Monday when the conference office announced its volleyball weekly awards. Brown was tabbed the Defensive Specialist of the Week, and Aquino was named the Rookie of the Week.
Brown finished with 41 digs over two matches, while Aquino totaled 63 assists and 20 digs as NSU split its opening weekend in conference play. In a pair of road matches, the Spartans topped Coppin State in five sets on Friday in a 3-2 win before suffering a 3-0 loss against Morgan State on Sunday.
Brown, a transfer from West Virginia who hails from Warrenton, Va., posted 24 digs against Coppin State, the most by an NSU player in four years. She added 17 digs against the Bears and finished with an average of 5.13 digs per set during the two matches. She also added five assists, two service aces and one kill over the weekend.
Aquino, meanwhile, had her first double-double of the year with 33 assists and 14 digs against the Eagles, both season highs, while adding 30 assists and six digs in the match against MSU. The native of Stafford, Texas also finished the week with three kills, two service aces and one block.
Aquino currently ranks sixth in the MEAC with 6.46 assists per set. Brown is averaging 4.52 digs per set, a mark that would put her second in the league.
They marked the first two weekly honors for NSU volleyball this year.
NSU will next host UMES on Friday at 6 p.m. and Delaware State on Sunday at 3 p.m. for its first home matches of the season.
