Fired Portsmouth auditor likely to get severance package

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — An official says Portsmouth Auditor Jesse Andre Thomas will likely get a three-month severance package after being fired.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1YVsIP7) Vice Mayor Elizabeth Psimas, who led the effort to terminate Thomas, says the council hasn’t formally discussed the severance, but she intends for Thomas to receive one.

The Portsmouth City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday, Apr 26, to fire Thomas effective immediately. Several members cited his lack of productivity.

The city’s July pay plan shows his salary was $97,391. Therefore, he would collect about $24,000 and benefits.

Thomas’ contract says that he would get a severance package if fired without cause. If fired with cause, he would not.

Psimas says there’s been no discussion on whether another city auditor will be hired or if an outside firm will be used.
