NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State tennis teams won all four weekly MEAC honors when the conference office announced the awards for the last week of the regular season on Wednesday, April 20, morning.
Sophomore Antonio Pejic and senior Andrea Macchiavello were each named the MEAC Player of the Week on the men’s and women’s sides, respectively. Freshman Benedikt Henning earned the Rookie of the Week award for men’s tennis, while freshman Marta Gomar did the same for the women.
Macchiavello won in singles against both Morgan State and North Carolina Central last week. She defeated Cierra Plummer by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 4 singles as the Spartans downed MSU on Saturday to claim the Northern Division crown with a perfect 6-0 MEAC record this year. Macchiavello also topped Jasmine Gabriel of NCCU, 6-3 and 6-4, at the No. 3 spot in the lineup on Sunday, and teamed up with Mafalda Lhorca to defeat the Eagle duo of Gabriel and Mia Ramic by a 7-5 margin at No. 2 doubles.
Gomar also won in singles over MSU, defeating Kayla Price at the third position, 6-1 and 6-4. She did not compete in doubles against the Bears but did against NCCU, topping Lynsey Cover and Tamara Jeremic by a 7-5 margin with teammate Liza Gordeeva at the third position.
Despite suffering a setback to Morgan State on Saturday, Pejic and Henning both came away with victories in singles. Pejic defeated Evan Ward at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, 6-4 and 6-4, while Henning topped Treajh Ferguson at the top spot, 6-2 and 7-6(4).
Gomar and Henning each won the rookie of the week awards for the fourth time this season. On Tuesday, both players were also named the MEAC Rookie of the Year for the 2016 season for their respective genders.
It also marked Pejic’s second player of the week award this year and the first for Macchiavello, the latter of whom earned second-team all-conference honors on Tuesday as well.
The two teams will begin play in the MEAC tournament on Thursday, April 21, during the quarterfinal round. The No. 1 seed NSU women will take on North Carolina Central from the Southern Division at 8:30 a.m., while the men, the No. 2 seed from the North, play South Carolina State at 4 p.m. at ODU’s Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
