NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s tennis team began MEAC Northern Division play on Saturday, Mar 19, afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of Delaware State at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans won easily in doubles and also claimed a pair of three-set victories in singles to improve to 3-8 overall. The Hornets fell to 4-3 overall as well as 2-3 in conference play.

“This was a great win for our ladies to start divisional play, especially as they battled difficult conditions throughout the match,” said head coach Worth Richardson.

On a day that saw more than 20 mph winds at NSU, the Spartans lost only one game in each of their three doubles matches. At the No. 1 spot, junior Ana Popovic and sophomore Dajana Cvjetkovic topped Shelby Moffatt and Aayushi Chouhan by a 6-1 score. Junior Liza Gordeeva and freshman Marta Gomar also won by the same score at the third doubles position over the DSU duo of Colleen Beck and Yelyzaveta Bossonova.

Seniors Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca were up 4-1 in their match at No. 2 doubles against Maria Rachi and Elvira Galieva before it was called due to NSU securing the doubles point with the other two matches.

Gomar, meanwhile, had to rally at No. 3 singles against Galieva. She fell by a 6-1 score in the first set before taking the second set, 6-4. Gomar completed the comeback with a 10-7 victory in the third set tiebreaker.

Popovic also needed a third set to win her singles match at the fifth position. She actually won the first set against Chouhan by a 6-1 margin before falling in the second set, 6-4. Popovic triumphed in the end with a 6-4 win in the third set.

Gordeeva faced a battle in the second set in her match against Milan Graves at the No. 2 position. Gordeeva swept the first set, 6-0, before needing a second set tiebreaker to win. She did just that, winning 7-2 to claim the second set, 7-6.

Macchiavello and Lhorca had much easier times in their matches. Macchiavello topped Rachi at the fourth slot, 6-1 and 6-1, while Lhorca only dropped one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bossonova at the sixth position.

At the top of the lineup, Cvjetkovic knocked off Moffatt by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

NSU will host Northern Division foe Coppin State next Friday, Mar 25, at the NSU Tennis Complex at 3 p.m.
