Norfolk, Va. (AP) — A former Norfolk International Airport baggage handler won’t go to jail for stealing an iPad from a sailor’s luggage.
U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson sentenced Donte Chandler to three years of probation Wednesday, Mar 16.
Chandler pleaded guilty in December to attempted mail fraud. According to a statement of facts filed with a plea agreement, the 34-year-old Chandler took the iPad from the sailor’s baggage. He then called the sailor and told him he had found and purchased the iPad on Craigslist for $200.
The sailor offered Chandler $100 to mail the iPad back to him. Chandler agreed to the deal and placed the iPad in the mail.
Two other Norfolk baggage handlers were sentenced earlier this week to more than a year in prison for stealing from travelers’ luggage.
