Former Spartan makes it big in Hollywood

Norfolk State University is home to many notable alumni in many professions of the working world; of the many Spartans J.B. Smoove has been making waves in the Hollywood scene.

Born Jerry Angelo Brooks, Smoove is an American actor, writer, comedian, and voice actor; he is mostly known for his work on Kevin Hart’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood” television show. Brooks was born in Plymouth, North Carolina. He attended Norfolk State University in 1984 where he shortened his name to J.B. and added “Smoove” as his name for stand-up comedy.

Smoove began his career in 1999 when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. He landed numerous roles in shows such as “The Lyricist Lounge Show,” “The Chris Rock Show,” and “Premium Blend.” He landed his first big feature film in “Pootie Tang” where he narrated and acted in the film. Afterwards, he acted in several more successful films such as “Mr. Deeds,” “Date Night,” and “Hall Pass.”

Currently Smoove is working on the third season of his show “Four Courses with J.B. Smoove” on the Madison Square Garden network.
