Long wins 2nd straight MEAC Rookie of the Week honor

NORFOLK, Va. – For the second straight time freshman forward Alex Long of the Norfolk State men’s basketball team has been named the MEAC Rookie of the Week, as the conference office announced the weekly awards late Monday morning.
 
Long had 13 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks and three assists in a pair of games last week for the Spartans. He posted six points and tallied career highs of nine rebounds, four blocks and three assists in a 92-73 win over Savannah State last Monday at home.
 
On Saturday, he added seven points and five rebounds in the Spartans’ 86-76 loss at Hampton in the Battle of the Bay.
 
The native of Clinton, Md., is currently averaging 4.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game on the season. In NSU’s eight MEAC games, Long has posted 8.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting close to 60 percent from the field.
 
The Spartans sit in third place in the league at 6-2, a half game behind South Carolina State (7-2). NSU will return to the court next Saturday at 4 p.m. on the road against fourth-place Howard at Burr Gymnasium.
