NORFOLK, Va. – After setting the school record for a single game score, Norfolk State sophomore Briana Gardner was named the MEAC Bowler of the Week on Tuesday morning, the conference office announced.

Competing at the Lady Bulldog Classic at Bowie State, Gardner rolled a 289 on Saturday during the third match of the day against Virginia State. She topped the previous school best of 280 set by Sheila-Marie Smith on Jan. 24, 2009.

Gardner also tallied a 234 in the opening match of the day and finished second at the tournament in terms of individual average. Her 215.2 tally in five games marked a career high. Only Fairleigh Dickinson’s Nicolette Sarin (230.0) did better than Gardner at the tournament.

The No. 20 Spartans went 8-5 at the tournament that was hosted by Bowie State at the AMF Lanes in Laurel, Md.

It also marked the second time this year an NSU bowler received the weekly MEAC award after freshman Alexa Rodriguez earned the distinction in late October.

The Spartans will take part in the Kutztown Invitational beginning on Friday.
