NSU student-athlete Amber Brown has awakened from a medically induced coma after she was found unresponsive on Jan. 1 due to complications with diabetes. The 19-year-old Lady Spartans forward was diagnosed last year with Type 1 diabetes.

After suffering from a spiked blood sugar level, Brown went into cardiac arrest and suffered continuous brain seizures. It is reported that on New Year’s, Brown went into cardiac arrest three times for periods lasting up to 20 minutes.

Last week, Brown’s condition showed improvement when physicians noted that Brown was able to open her eyes. As of Wednesday, Jan. 14, Brown is able to roll her eyes and blink them.

Brown’s family remains in high spirits, including her sister Ebony Brown, a former Lady Spartan, who played for two seasons alongside her sister Amber.  The Brown family has been at Amber’s bedside since the ordeal began and have reached out to the community for support. The hashtags #prayforAmber and #Amber’sArmy were created on social media and the Norfolk State community has gathered in support of Brown.

A GoFundMe page was made in honor of Brown and donations have been taken to assist in the medical expenses for the family.

The cause of Amber’s condition is still unknown.
