Former Suffolk mayor gives archives to historical society
SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Historical Society will be using former Suffolk Mayor Andy Damiani’s personal archives to bulk up the society’s 20th century collection.
Damiani tells the Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1HSTaWc) that he’s saved decades of newspaper clippings, live radio records, videos and other items related to the history of Suffolk.
Domiani, now 94, served on the Suffolk City Council from 1971 to 1992, and was the city’s mayor from 1982 to 1986.
Biographer Phyllis Speidell says the archives are the documented history of Hampton Roads for the last 50 to 60 years.
Historical Society spokesman Lee Shepard says he believes the bulk of the archives will be significant and worth preserving. The group will use the materials to tell the story of Suffolk and the development of modern-day Virginia.
