Baggage handlers plead guilty to theft conspiracy at airport

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Two baggage handlers have pleaded guilty for their roles in a conspiracy to steal items from passengers’ bags at Norfolk International Airport.

In a statement Wednesday, the Department of Justice said 25-year-old Chris Arthur Perry and 27-year-old Gregory Paul Wingard pleaded guilty to stealing items from Dec. 2013 to June 2015.

According to a statement of facts filed with a plea agreement, the two broke into checked baggage and removed money, electronics and other items before selling them to members of the community or pawn shops. The DOJ says the two targeted firearm containers while searching for bags to break into.

Both were indicted by a federal grand jury on Oct. 7, 2015.

Each man faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison when sentenced on March 14, 2016.
