Short Named to Lou Henson Award Watch List

rp_primary_Jeff_Short_vs_HU_4NORFOLK, Va. – Senior guard Jeff Short of the Norfolk State men’s basketball team was named to the 2015 Lou Henson Award preseason watch list by CollegeInsider.com on Monday. The award is given annually to the top mid-major player in Division I basketball by the organization.

Short is one of 30 players nationally listed on the watch list and the only player from the MEAC to be honored. He heads into his redshirt senior season in 2015-16 as the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year and the top returning scorer in the league.

In his first season with NSU last year, he earned first-team All-MEAC and NABC All-District 15 honors while also garnering second-team VaSID all-state and BOXTOROW HBCU All-America accolades. Short ranked second in the MEAC in scoring at 19.1 points per game and in the top 10 in the league in all three shooting percentages. CollegeInsider.com also named him a finalist for the Riley Wallace Award (top transfer in Division I) for 2014-15 and to the mid-season watch list for the Lou Henson Award last season as well.

The Lou Henson Award is named in honor of Henson, who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State, and he is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The Spartans kick off their season on Saturday at South Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest to be broadcast on the SEC Network+, the channel’s digital streaming platform
