NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — More than 600 sailors have returned to Norfolk following an eight-month deployment as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.
Media outlets report that the guided missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill and USS Forest Sherman returned to Norfolk Naval Station on Saturday.
The ships were deployed on March 9.
Destroyer Squadron 2 commodore Capt. Fred Pyle says the ships escorted merchant vessels through the Straight of Hormuz and helped ensure unencumbered navigation in Middle Eastern waterways.
The Winston Churchill traveled more than 64,000 miles and visited six ports. The Forrest Sherman traveled 36,000 miles and visited nine ports.
