RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Chesterfield County has scuttled a proposal to install cameras on school buses to catch drivers who illegally pass while children are getting on or off.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1KHlW6K ) that officials dropped the idea after Attorney General Mark Herring issued an opinion saying state law does not authorize such programs.
Under the program, violators would have received a $250 ticket in the mail. Herring said officers could issue tickets in person rather than through the mail, but County Attorney Jeffrey Minks said police decided that wouldn’t be cost-effective.
Herring issued the opinion this month in response to a query from Albemarle County, which also had been considering installing cameras on buses. Falls Church and Arlington County abandoned their school bus camera programs in response to the opinion.
