LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s tennis duo of junior Liza Gordeeva and sophomore Dajana Cvjetkovic earned a first-round win last Thursday in doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regional at Liberty.
Competing at the Cook Tennis Center, the NSU tandem defeated Morgan State’s Cierra Plummer and Kayla Price by an 8-3 score in the round of 64. The following day on Friday, Gordeeva and Cvjetkovic fell to Virginia Tech’s Raluca Mita and Ilinca Stoica by a score of 8-1.
“It is always great to pick up a win over another MEAC team in a fall tournament,” said head coach Worth Richardson, in reference to defeating Northern Division opponent Morgan State.
Cvjetkovic also competed in singles, first dropping a matchup on Friday to Virginia’s Erica Susi, 6-3 and 6-1, in the round of 64. Then on Saturday, Cvjetkovic succumbed to West Virginia’s Habiba Shaker in the first round of the consolation bracket, 6-1 and 6-1.
“The women have played a lot of tennis the fall in a short amount of time,” Richardson continued. “They have shown plenty of mental and physical toughness against some strong competition. Now as the fall season comes to a close, it will be time to train even harder for the spring.”
The fall season will conclude for NSU women’s tennis at the Wofford Invite beginning on Oct. 30.
