Battle brewing over power line through Civil War site

DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) — Preservationists and historians are taking a stand against a utility cooperative’s plan to install transmission lines through a Civil War battlefield in Dinwiddie.

The Progress-Index (http://bit.ly/1PwIVYK ) reports that Southside Electric Cooperative plans to install the large transmission lines through Bonneville Farm. The farm was at the center of the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House in 1865.

The battle was one of the closing engagements of the Civil War.

The co-op says say the proposed line is an upgrade of existing distribution lines that follow the same route. It says the upgrade is needed to improve electric reliability in an area known for losing power

The Bonneville Farm dates to the 18th century. The stately home at the center of the property was built in 1800.
