Ex-treasurer to state senator pleads guilty to embezzling

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A former campaign treasurer for Virginia Senate Minority Leader Richard Saslaw has pleaded guilty to her role in three fraud schemes, including embezzling more than $650,000 in campaign funds.

Fifty-one-year-old Linda Diane Wallis of Fairfax entered the pleas Thursday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

Prosecutors say Wallis, who also used the name Lynn Wallis Miller, wrote dozens of checks totaling $653,000 in 2013 and 2014 to two fake law firms she created to facilitate the fraud.

Wallis faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison at sentencing on Jan. 29 2016.
