NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State senior linebacker Deon King was named the MEAC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance on Saturday against Hampton, the conference office announced Monday.

King led a stout defensive effort in the Spartans’ 24-14 win over Hampton in the 53rd annual Battle of the Bay. King finished with 10 total tackles, half a tackle for loss, an interception and two quarterback hurries. He returned a first-quarter interception 26 yards to the Hampton 23-yard line to set up the Spartans’ first touchdown of the game, a 23-yard Gerard Johnson scoring run.

King and his defensive teammates held Hampton – the MEAC’s leading scoring and total offense entering the game – without a point after halftime. The Spartans also forced four turnovers, which led to 14 NSU points.

King shared the MEAC defensive honor this week with Howard defensive back Craig Johnson.

This is the first time King has won the MEAC’s weekly defensive award in his career. The senior from Reston, Va., continues to lead the MEAC and the nation in tackles per game, with 64 in four games (16.0 average).
