LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Students at private Christian schools in the Lynchburg area will no longer have the opportunity to earn up to a full scholarship from Liberty University.

Liberty President Jerry Falwell tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1NrqC7N ) that the executive committee of the university’s board recently decided to end the scholarship program.

The scholarships were provided to graduates of Temple Christian School, Timberlake Christian Schools and Faith Christian Academy.

Falwell says the university created the scholarship program in the 1990s at a time when it had empty seats to fill. This year, thousands of students who wanted to attend Liberty had to be turned away.

He says a variety of other scholarship opportunities are available for local students.
