Lawsuit alleges discrimination in closure of Bedford school

BEDFORD, Va. (AP) — The Bedford County School Board is being sued by students who allege their school was closed because of racial and disability discrimination.

The lawsuit challenges the board’s 2014 decision to close Body Camp Elementary instead of Moneta Elementary. The lawsuit says 30 percent of Body Camp’s students are minorities, compared to 12 percent of Moneta’s students.

According to the lawsuit, an efficiency study recommended that Moneta be closed. The lawsuit also says Moneta isn’t handicapped-accessible.

The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1L18RKZ ) reports that 28 adults filed the lawsuit on Monday in Bedford County Circuit Court on behalf of 33 black students and one student who is disabled.

The school board denies the allegations and says it will defend itself against the lawsuit.
