NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A special grand jury is meeting to investigate the fatal shooting of a mentally ill man by a Norfolk police officer.

The special grand jury will be empaneled on Monday by Norfolk Circuit Court Judge Junius P. Fulton III.

Norfolk commonwealth’s attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1eXzUJJ ) that testimony could take more than one day.

Police have said 35-year-old David Latham was shot after he threatened the officer with a knife. The shooting occurred on June 6, 2014, at Latham’s home.

Latham’s mother, Audrey Latham, has said that her son had schizophrenia and had recently stopped taking his medication. She also has said police came to the family’s home in the past to help her son obtain psychiatric care.
