NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman Romero Hines set a new personal-best in winning the long jump title at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport Invitational on Sunday, the final meet of the indoor season for the Spartan men’s track and field team.
Hines capped indoor season like he started it, with a long jump victory at CNU. In December, he recorded a PR of 23-1.75 to win the title. On Sunday, he improved that mark by nearly four inches, leaping a PR of 23-5.5.
Hines’ big effort highlighted a small contingent of NSU field athletes who competed at the meet. Fellow freshman Joseph Boyd was third in the high jump (6-4) and another freshman, Shaw Barfield, placed seventh in the pole vault (12-7.5).
The Spartans displayed their depth on the track, amassing eight top-10 finishes to win the team title with 122 points. Nathnael Meseret was runner-up in the mile in 4 minutes, 18.66 seconds, while teammate Desmond Fogg was close behind in third (PR of 4:19.32).
In the sprints, freshman Jaylen Carr took fourth in both the 60 meters (6.93 seconds) and 200 meters (22.26). In the 200m, Carr finished just behind teammate Steve Coles, who clocked a 22.16 to take third place.
The Spartans have more than one month off from competition before opening outdoor season at the Virginia Cup in Charlottesville on March 21.
