Man shot by Chesapeake police in exchange of gunfire dies

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — Chesapeake police say a man shot by officers in an exchange of gunfire has died.

Police spokesman Ravi Sheth tells media outlets that the officers shot 34-year-old Mario Jordan of Chesapeake after he fired a rifle at them.

The shooting occurred Wednesday, January 14th night. Sheth says the officers were responding to a report of an attempted suicide when they saw Jordan in the middle of a street.

Sheth says Jordan fired a rifle at the officers as they walked toward him, and they returned fire. He later died at a local hospital.

The officers weren’t injured. One officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
