The Department of Mass Communications and Journalism (MCJR) at Norfolk State University is hosting its annual MCJR Week from March 30 through April 2, 2026, bringing students a week full of networking, professional development, and hands-on learning opportunities. Centered around the theme “Your Story Starts Here,” the event aims to empower the next generation of Black media professionals by connecting students with industry leaders.
Open to all students, MCJR Week 2026 will feature a variety of events designed to help students find their voice and define their career paths. The week will include workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions focused on real-world media skills. Students can expect opportunities to engage directly with professionals across journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and content creation.
Among the key highlights are career advice panels, a media career fair, and a content creation workshop. The event will also include an AI and sports media panel hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists, as well as speed networking sessions that allow students to build meaningful industry connections. Additional programming includes a personal career enhancement bootcamp and sessions on resume writing and personal branding.
MCJR Week will also showcase signature events that celebrate both student achievement and industry excellence. A special celebration honoring Dr. Grady James’ 50 years at NSU will be held by invitation, along with a green carpet event and alumni mixer connected to the Spartan Spotlight competition. The competition encourages students to submit original content for a chance to win a cash prize, highlighting emerging talent within the department.
Faculty Coordinator Deanna Moore-Heath emphasized the importance of exposure and opportunity in the field. She noted that careers in mass communications often do not follow a single defined path, making it essential for students to connect with professionals and explore different avenues. Events like MCJR Week, she explained, give students the chance to see successful alumni and industry leaders who once stood in their shoes.
In addition to professional development, the week promotes community and collaboration. Students are encouraged to attend events in business professional attire, engage with guest speakers, and take advantage of the networking environment. Refreshments will be provided at select events, creating a welcoming space for students to connect and learn.
The Department of Mass Communications and Journalism continues to offer rigorous and relevant academic programs, including undergraduate tracks in journalism and general broadcast. MCJR Week reflects the department’s commitment to preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving media industry.
With a full schedule of events across campus, MCJR Week 2026 promises to be a valuable experience for students interested in building careers in media. Registration is required for select workshops, and students are encouraged to participate early and often throughout the week.
