
The Norfolk State Lady Spartans took the game against the Coppin State Eagles on January 24th at Joseph Echols Hall. The Spartans extended their winning streak to four games with a 69-58 win over the Eagles for their 2000s themed home game.
The Spartans started the game winning the jump ball; however, the Eagles scored the first points with forward Sydney Burris making a hook shot. The first half of the quarter was led by the Eagles jumping out with 7-0 within the first five minutes.
Guard, Jasha Clinton, led the Spartans out of their drought with a lay-up at the 3:26 mark of the first quarter. After working their way to close the gap, guard Anjanae Richardson gave the Lady Spartans their first lead with a pull-up jumper from the free throw line. In addition, guard Da’Brya Clark closed the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Spartans a 14-10 lead.
Throughout the second quarter Clark stretched the gap making a pair of three-pointers. She also buried her fifth three-pointer of the game with 6:38 remaining in the second quarter before guard Niyah Gaston added her own three-pointer to make it a 15-point game at 30-15. The Eagles were relentless and closed out the half with a 6-2 run to catch up to the Spartans 34-21.
Ten-minutes were back on the clock to start quarter three, and no one scored for the first two minutes coming out of halftime. The Spartans broke the no-scoring streak going on a 9-2 run, giving them a 20-point lead which they kept to the end of the quarter 58-38.
As the Spartans still maintained their lead in the final period, Clark delivered two free throws around the 6:39 mark of the game, but the Eagles responded with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to catch up. Clark halted the run with her eighth three-pointer, and the Lady Spartans closed the game 69-58.
Leading for the Spartans was Clark with 30-points, three blocks, and two steals. Clinton also led in assists for the Spartans with eight assists. For the Eagles, Burris led with 12 points and three steals.
With this win, the Lady Spartans improved to 10-11 overall record and 5-1 record in MEAC play for this 2025-26 basketball season. On the flip side, the Eagles have the opposite. They fell 4-18 in their overall record and 2-4 in the conference.
For the fourth time this season and second week in a row, leading player, Da’Brya Clark received the MEAC Player of the Week honor. In addition, forward Carmen Kweti received the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for her first time this season.
For their upcoming game, the Lady Spartans will be travelling to D.C. to face the Howard University Bison on January 31st at 1:00 p.m. ET. The next home game for the Lady Spartans is Saturday, February 7th at Joseph Echols Hall against the North Carolina Central Eagles for Family Day at 2:00pm ET.
