When you think about 90 years of legacy and excellence, Norfolk State University is a name that stands tall. To mark this historic milestone, the university called upon none other than the legendary Patti LaBelle to headline its 90th Founders Day Concert.

Held inside the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center, the event drew more than 500 guests, all gathered to honor NSU’s nine decades of impact while witnessing an unforgettable performance. With a career spanning over 60 years, LaBelle brought the house down from the very first note, showing exactly why she remains a living legend.

Taking the stage right on time in a striking green ensemble, Patti and her band launched into a setlist of her greatest hits, including classics like “Love, Need and Want You” and “If Only You Knew.” The crowd sang along word for word.

The people’s performer, Patti, even joined in on the viral “803 Fresh” dance, playfully connecting with fans and keeping the energy high.

LaBelle also made sure the evening carried a spirit of celebration and gratitude. Midway through her set, she turned the concert into a full-on praise break, delivering a moving gospel medley that filled the hall with joy.

As the night drew to a close, Patti saved one of her biggest hits for last, “Lady Marmalade.” The entire audience rose to their feet, singing, clapping, and cheering through a standing ovation. Norfolk State University President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston joined in the celebration, alongside guest Martin Luther King III, who was also in attendance to honor the moment.

More than just a concert, the night was a reminder of what elegance, legacy, and community look like when gathered in one room. Patti LaBelle’s performance not only celebrated NSU’s rich past but also spotlighted what the future would be.
