Rolling out the welcome wagon for Norfolk State University’s upcoming recruits, the buzz on campus has been all the rage about the legendary Michael Vick signing as head coach. Michael Vick officially signed with Norfolk State University, (NSU) as the head coach on Monday, December 16, 2024. A press conference was held on December 23, 2024, where Vick was officially inaugurated as the 19th new head coach at NSU. This monumental signing of Vick marks a homecoming for the former NFL quarterback and has been recognized as a major move for the Norfolk State football program.
With the new coaching staff and a plethora of fresh talent, the university’s athletic program will generate more funding, which will be accessible to current and incoming student-athletes. Vick’s signing as head coach will raise the profile of NSU’s football program and enhance the Spartans’ overall image. Vick’s experience and expertise in the NFL are integrated to develop the next gen of student-athletes. This is an opportunity for Vick to give back to his hometown and recruit in his home region, home to many undeveloped talents. Vick plans to lead, mentor, and transform the program for the athletes and the University.
Following Vick’s signing with NSU, DreSean Kendrick, a wide receiver, recently transferred from William & Mary. He took to social media to announce his commitment on January 18, 2025, to play for NSU as a graduate transfer with one-year remaining eligibility in the upcoming season.
The decision to transfer to NSU was quoted as, “A no-brainer.” Once Kendrick realized his Godfather Vick had signed with NSU.
When asked about how he could contribute to the pre-existing team he mentioned,
“I just wanna come in and make plays; the reason I left my last school was because I wasn’t getting the opportunity.”
These incoming recruits bring a winning mindset. They are eager to impress their high-level coaches and gain the respect of their teammates, demanding nothing less than excellence from one another.
“There are a lot of eyes on the program,” now more than ever, with Vick signing as head coach.

David Ojeigbe, a Former 4-star edge all-star recruit from the University of Pittsburgh, has also officially committed to NSU to play for Vick. This All-American title recipient is a force to be reckoned with. Ojeibe commented that his commitment to the university was a reflection of,
“Vick and just honestly his upbringing, with his wisdom, and with his great staff, and great knowledge of the game of football, I feel like I can definitely grow underneath him.”
Representing the DMV, this defensive end stands firm behind Vick’s commitment to the University.
“Coach Vick has a great plan for Norfolk State and just really executing that plan is to go out there and win and just change the culture.”

The legacy that Vick has led for the next generation of inspiring athletes has felt like a full-circle moment for many of the athletes committing to play for him.
The goal for this athlete is clear. Not only is Ojeigbe looking for the team to pull through with a successful season with hopes of obtaining a “10-1 Season, [reaching] the top of the MEAC.” Ojeigbe also emphasized that he looking for success beyond the field by recognizing the importance of academics, building better leadership, and bettering black men in society.
As students, staff, and the community continue to generate excitement for the upcoming football season, it is evident that with the amount of talent coming in, the Spartans are looking toward a bright and successful 2025 season.
