The Spartans took down the Delaware State Hornets 38-19 on November 16 at the Dick Price Stadium for their last home game of the 2024 season. The game’s theme was Military Appreciation and included recognition of senior Spartan football players

The Spartans won the coin toss and chose for the Hornets to receive the ball to start the game.

Not scoring on their first drive, the Hornets punted the ball away, but it was muffed by the Spartans and recovered by Hornets Michel Bergeron at the Spartans 13-yard line, leading them to a field goal 0-3.

The Spartans responded with a touchdown followed by a point after touchdown 7-3 on their first drive of the game, starting at the Spartans 39-yard line and making 8 plays.

Quarter one ended with the Hornets quarterback C.J. Henry getting sacked and his helmet coming off, but the play went under review. The result was a personal foul on Spartan defensive back Dylan Long for targeting, and he was ejected from the game.

The Hornets started the second quarter with a field goal 7-6 after Spartan kicker Noah Tracy’s punt went out of bounds at the hornets 40-yard line where the Hornets began their drive.

Having too many players on the field at the time the Hornets snapped the ball, the Spartans got a five-yard penalty for illegal substitution. Those five yards helped the Hornets get a touchdown to take the lead 7-13, but the Spartans responded with a field goal to end the half 10-13.

Coming out of halftime, the Spartans dominated the third quarter and took over the game. Hornets’ cornerback, Shane Thrift, had two personal fouls in the beginning of the quarter: one for a face mask call and the other for unsportsmanlike conduct.

They later fumbled the ball on their drive which was recovered by Spartans nickel back, Jamare Robinson, and led to a Spartan touchdown pass to wide receiver, Kam’Ryn Thomas, 17-13.

On the Hornets’ next drive, a pass was intercepted by defensive back, Devon Allen, leading the Spartans to another touchdown and successful kick 24-13. With three penalties on the Hornets back-to-back, the Spartans got their fourth touchdown of the game 31-13 to end the quarter.

The fourth quarter was slow for both teams, but the Spartans were in a good position with their widest lead of the game. The Hornets tried to fight back and got a touchdown 31-19, but King secured the win for the Spartans with a touchdown 38-19 coming off of the 2-minute timeout mark.

Spartan leaders of the game were quarterback Jalen Daniels with 155 passing yards, King with 89 rushing yards, and Thomas with 87 receiving yards.

Hornet leaders of the game were Henry with 121 passing yards, running back Jaden Sutton with 154 rushing yards, and wide receiver NyGee Lolley with 78 receiving yards.

The Spartans last game of the season will be against the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Saturday, November 23 at 1:30 pm in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
