In the United States, citizens who are 18 years or older, are guaranteed the right to vote under the 26th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. As election day quickly approaches, it is imperative that those who can vote understand the importance of exercising this right.

That said, here is a list of five reasons why you should register to vote and head to the polls on November 5th.

·      Voting Empowers You to Use Your Voice

Voting gives you the power to influence decisions and policies that directly affect your community, state, and country. Your vote is a direct reflection of your opinions, values, and beliefs on which path you believe the country should take. When you cast your ballot, you’re ensuring that your ideas or concerns are being addressed as a part of the national conversation.

·      Close Elections

In close elections, such as this upcoming presidential election, outcomes are often swayed by very few votes. A small difference in voter turnout or support can make all the difference in which candidate wins.

For example, in the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, the results were determined by less than 1,000 votes. According to Dave Roos, a journalist for History.com, “At last count, Bush received 2,912,790 votes in Florida and Gore got 2,912,253 votes. Out of the nearly 6 million votes cast in Florida, Bush won by a margin of 537 votes, or 0.009 percent of the total votes cast in Florida.”

This makes individual votes incredibly powerful and shows that collective participation can lead to major changes in leadership and policy direction.

·      The History of Voting Rights

Historically, voting rights have been denied based on race, gender, and socioeconomic status. As a result, marginalized groups have struggled and fought to participate in elections. Going to the polls ensures that their sacrifices and efforts are honored and upheld while promoting a sense of unity and equality among communities. It is important to remember that there was a time when voting was not an option for everyone, therefore, voting rights should not be taken for granted.

·      Representation or Advocacy for Vulnerable Groups

Voting allows you to advocate for the needs and interests of those who are vulnerable or unable to participate in elections, such as children, the elderly, oppressed groups, or non-citizens. By casting a ballot, voters can support candidates and policies that focus on the needs of these groups, helping to create a more inclusive society where everyone’s interests are considered and protected.

·      Protection of Democracy

The United States prides itself on being a country that promotes democracy. Voting ensures that “the power of the people” remains the driving force behind electing representatives and creating legislation.

With less than 24 hours until election day, recognizing voting power is vital. While there is no doubt that America’s electoral process needs improvements, a person’s right to vote isn’t something that should be relinquished. Your voice matters, your vote matters, and you can make change.
