From Monday, August 19th, through Wednesday, August 22nd, students from Norfolk State University attended the DNC, also known as the Democratic National Convention. The students had the opportunity to attend the DNC while interning with CBS.
One such student, Olivia Royster, described her experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime” moment as she embarked on a historic occasion.
The DNC is a ceremonial event where Democrats from all 50 states gather to discuss the future of the Democratic Party.
This year, the convention was held in Chicago, where they rallied behind Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz to be the next President and Vice President of the United States for the next four years.
The students were selected to be the first group of HBCU students to assist CBS at the DNC which allowed them to be in the presence of media professionals, public servants, and celebrities.
The students learned about the impact of the convention on the community.
“I hadn’t realized how much energy surrounded the Democratic convention until the week of the events,” said Royster.
This opportunity also allowed the students to showcase their work, particularly those attending HBCUs.
According to HBCU GAMEDAY, Kamala Harris wanted to highlight the importance of leadership, excellence, and the significant contributions of HBCUs to broader society, as she was once in the shoes of an HBCU student at Howard University.
“It was an honor to be the first group of HBCU students to work as runners with the company. I am confident that they have seen our excellence, talent, and professionalism, which is often overlooked,” noted Royster.
Royster went on to say, “I think it’s crucial that leaders like those who made this opportunity possible continue to create space for us,” as Kamala Harris intended by recognizing their crucial role in empowering future generations of Black leaders.
