VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen says the city will likely repay $20 million to the state since it doesn’t plan to extend light rail.
Media outlets report that before voters struck down plans in November to extend the light rail, the state had provided $20 million to help with the development. Henson said Tuesday that the money will be returned.
The city plans to repay the loan without interest in $5 million installments over four years.
City officials held a meeting Tuesday to hear what residents want to do with a 10.6-mile strip of land purchased in 2010 for the project. Residents said the city must continue to invest in roads, preserve the railroad right of way, improve the reliability of buses and continue to investigate new mass-transit technology.
