LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Martha Bissah earned a win in her first-ever collegiate 800-meter competition and senior Nickheila John posted two top-10 finishes in the sprints to pace the Spartan women’s track and field team at the Liberty University Kickoff on Saturday.

Bissah, who debuted last week with a win in the mile at the UNC Open, competed at Liberty in her what is probably her best event. The 2014 Youth Olympic Games gold medalist in the 800m won Saturday with a time of 2 minutes, 12.14 seconds. That ranks as the fastest MEAC 800m time so far this season.

Teammate Candice Higgins also ran well in the 800, taking fifth place in 2:16.65.

John showed well in both of her sprints. She placed second in her heat and third overall in the 400 meters, posting a time of 57.82 seconds. Chazmin Fullwood was close behind, placing sixth (57.97) and freshman Jada Key won her heat and was 19th overall in 1:01.13.

In the 200 meters, John was again second in her heat, this time placing sixth overall in 25.19 seconds.

The Spartans are back in action next weekend when they travel to Pennsylvania for the Penn State National meet, hosted by Penn State.
