Norfolk State University’s radio station, WNSB 91.1 FM (Hot 91), was awarded a Corporation for Public Broadcasting Community Service Grant for $81,235 effective through September 30, 2017. WNSB, a part of the public broadcast system, has aired quality programs and music for more than 36 years. The station has also served as a training ground for up-and-coming broadcasters. “Receiving the CPB grant really boosts our efforts to expand our services and programming,” said Edith Thorpe, WNSB general manager. “We know that our listeners count on us to bring them the latest news, information and best music around. This grant means that the CPB believes in the WNSB public radio mission.”

WNSB has become one of the most listened to public radio stations with an urban format in Hampton Roads and the only public radio station with an urban alternative format in Virginia. The station first signed on the air in February 1980 as a noncommercial radio station with an educational format. WNSB conducted its first-ever on-air membership campaign – MemberFest 2016 back in April. The week-long membership drive garnered nearly $11,000 in donations and hundreds of new members connecting to the radio station.
