RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police and their families are preparing to gather to remember law enforcement officials who have died.

State Police are holding their annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Thursday.

This year’s ceremony will honor the lives of Troopers Nathan-Michael W. Smith and Chad P. Dermyer.

Smith died in 2015 after his car crashed in Prince George County when he was responding to a fatal crash scene. Dermyer was shot and killed in March at a Richmond bus station.

State police will unveil a portrait of Smith that will be hung in the Col. C.W. Woodson Jr. Memorial Gallery at the Virginia State Police Academy.

The ceremony will also recognize dozens of other state law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
