CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — Fire officials say a discarded cigarette was the cause of a house fire in suburban Richmond that killed five people, including two children.

The blaze last month in Chesterfield was the deadliest fire in the recorded history of Chesterfield County.

County fire marshals announced in a news release Wednesday that the fire started in the garage of the house and was caused by a cigarette that was thrown away without being fully extinguished.

A 3-year-old and a 1-year-old were among the victims of the fire, which broke out in the early morning of Jan. 17. Two grandparents and a well-known youth cheerleading coach were also killed. Five other people escaped the fire.
